Perhaps with memories of garden sheds or wooden summer houses in mind, many people presume that garden rooms will be too cold to use in the winter. It can prevent people who may benefit from installing a garden room from taking the leap. They presume that as the garden room is made of natural materials and is separate from the main house, it’s not going to have the same degree of insulation as a house. They might also think that it can’t easily be heated.

In fact, garden rooms are warm enough to use throughout the year. There’s nothing cold, damp or drafty about a contemporary garden room. Here’s why…

Good Insulation

Well designed contemporary garden rooms using modern construction techniques offer just as much comfort as you find in a room in your house. In some cases, particularly when compared to older properties, a garden room has greater levels of insulation than in the main property.

The walls of our garden rooms are made from structural grade timber, then externally lined to add maximum strength and rigidity. The walls are then covered with a breathable vapour barrier to allow the building to breathe, and to help keep moisture out.

The floor is set slightly above ground level, making sure that no timber is left in contact with the ground. This is done to prevent rising damp and rot, and to create an air gap underneath to help keep it moisture free.

A great deal of attention to detail is paid throughout to help keep your garden office dry, warm and comfortable.

Keeping you warm

The key to ensuring your garden room is comfortable to use all year round is the high-level insulation that we use. The roofs and floor have 100mm of PIR backed Kingspan insulation between the joists. This helps prevent the cold coming up from the ground and reduces dramatically the amount of heat lost through the roof.

In the walls, there’s 75mm PIR foil backed Kingspan insulation in between the studs. It’s then lined with 25mm PIR backed Kingspan sheets.

Heating as standard

Every garden room supplied and installed by Garden Room Sanctuary comes with a fully fitted comprehensive electrical package which includes a 2kw convector heater.

Warm as toast

As well as electrical heating many garden room owners fit multi-fuel burning stoves into their garden rooms. It’s a very straightforward process, and because garden rooms are so well-insulated, they only need a small stove to keep them warm even in the coldest of weather.

Other options may also be available such as underfloor heating and wall-mounted radiators.

During the winter months, there’s nothing better than being inside your garden room while there’s frost or snow on the ground. You get a ringside seat to whatever the weather is throwing at us, but inside you stay warm, dry and cosy.

Insulation helps in the summer too

Insulation isn’t just about ensuring your garden room stays warm enough to use in the winter. It also has an impact on the temperature inside during the summer months as well. Some traditional garden structures could become unbearably hot when the weather was warm. That’s not the case with a garden room, where the insulation helps to keep the temperature inside within a comfortable range.

It’s also possible to add air conditioning or a ceiling fan to your garden room to help make for a more comfortable environment.

An all year-round space

Garden rooms can be used comfortably all year round. It’s one of the reasons why they’ve seen such a rapid rise in popularity over the last few years. Whether you’re looking for a bespoke home office, guest bedroom, teenage crash pad or your own home bar, then a garden room is an adaptable choice.
